As government makes £20 million available to drive forward technologies and processes for production of green hydrogen, Policy Exchange has published a comprehensive and contemporary guide to the opportunity for growth of the hydrogen sector across the UK.

The Fuelling the Future report is welcomed by Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership in calling for coordinated leadership from industry and central government to lower the cost of sustainable production in order for business and communities to fully benefit from the hydrogen economy.

Meanwhile, the Hydrogen Supply competition offers funding to accelerate the development of low carbon bulk hydrogen supply solutions. It challenges SMEs and research bodies to collaborate on R&D projects that show the way to lower cost green hydrogen supply.

Hydrogen has the potential to provide flexible services to help balance intermittent renewable energy, as well as a fuel for transport, for combined heat and power applications, for injection into the gas grid and for storage and distribution. In the short term, long distance freight offers the best opportunities for implementing hydrogen use at scale.

Fuelling the Future calls on national and local government to work with the private sector to invest in the necessary refuelling network as well as innovation grants for pilot programmes.
