If you’re running a business, you were probably used to working with a team of people in an office, until the last couple of years. Many employers have had to get used to managing a remote or hybrid team.

A remote team is a group of people who are brought together for the same purpose or project and all answer to the same company and boss but work from different locations.

A hybrid team is a group of people who are brought together for the same purpose or project and all answer to the same company and boss, but some of them may work in the company office and some may work remotely. Some may choose to do a combination of both if possible.

Set clear boundaries

This means everyone on the team knows what is expected of them and can focus on doing their best work. 

Make communication easy

Whether that’s by holding daily meetings to see how everyone is doing, providing dedicated work messaging channels so team members can get hold of each other, or having rules about what needs to be a meeting and what can be an email, smooth communication is even more important when your team is operating from different places. Cooperation will be much easier if everyone can stay in touch. 

Ensure everyone has the tools they need

Good wifi, a dedicated desk area, and webcams are just a few examples of tools needed to work from home effectively. Have a policy in place that your team can follow when they need to update their equipment. Getting on with the job is simple when you’re not worrying about an internet connection or broken laptop.

Give your team time off when they need it

Whether that’s due to burnout, deadlines, or something else, stress can have a significant impact on someone’s quality of life and work. So let your team know that it’s okay to have time off. We all need a break to recharge from time to time.

Yes, you want your team to do their best work. You also want them to maintain a sense of culture, despite being remote or hybrid. Incorporate culture-building into your team calls by taking time to ask after everyone personally, and set time aside for one-to-one calls with everyone you manage. This is the perfect time to deal with any issues they might be facing, and may not feel comfortable addressing in all-team meetings.
