As temperatures rise, so does the risk of fire. Here are a few simple steps every business can take to stay safe during the hot weather.

Keep fire doors closed: With warmer weather, it can be tempting to wedge fire doors open to improve airflow. Please do not do this.

Fire doors are designed to stop the spread of fire and smoke, protecting escape routes and giving people valuable time to evacuate safely.

Lithium batteries: Lithium batteries safely power devices such as mobile phones, laptops and e-bikes but it’s important to ensure that the products you buy meet UK safety standards. Ensure your battery is cool before placing on charge and do not cover. Charge batteries in a cool, dry area and keep them out of direct sunlight.

It is dangerous to store or charge items like e-bikes and mobility scooters in hallways, stairwells and landings (or your balcony). In the event of a fire, they will block the escape route.

Prevent Overheating: Turn off and unplug unused electrical equipment to prevent overheating. Avoid overloading sockets.

Manage Combustibles: Empty bins frequently to reduce the buildup of waste. If you store combustible items outside, keep them secure and as far away from dry grass or vegetation as possible.

Review Business Continuity: Ensure your Business Continuity Plan is up to date and test your emergency evacuation procedures with all staff.
