The UK has a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Prime Minister set out his Ten Point Plan for a green industrial revolution, where he outlined the importance of building back better and greener when the country recovers from COVID-19.
Skills will play a big part in this green recovery. The government is now planning to create and support 2 million good quality, green jobs by 2030 to support the UK to transition to net-zero.
The Institute is setting up a new green apprenticeships advisory panel to ensure that apprenticeships are front and centre.
The panel will advise where existing apprenticeships could be made greener and where we have gaps that could be filled by new green apprenticeships.
The panel will also feed into the new Green Jobs Taskforce set up by Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Education to develop an action plan for creating the necessary new green jobs and skills.
About the green apprenticeships advisory panel
As a member of the panel, you will initially be asked to advise on two things:
- enhancing our current apprenticeships to ensure that they meet the needs of the employers within the growing green economy
- creating new apprenticeship to reflect new occupations to meet the challenge to reach net-zero carbon
This panel will help focus our efforts and make sure the right skills are in place for the future workforce to deliver the green technology shift the UK needs.
We would like representatives from the following sectors:
- renewable energy
- green transport (electric/hydrogen)
- manufacturing
- engineering
- construction
- agriculture
The group will be hosted by us and supported by representatives from BEIS, Department for Transport and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The first meeting of the panel is likely to be mid-December, with meetings running approximately every eight weeks throughout 2021.
Wider advisory community
In addition to members on the panel, we would like to engage an extended advisory community to explore wider views about green apprenticeships and technical education. Joining this advisory community will give you a real say in the future of your industry.
