Made Smarter: Could your business be ready for its next step?

Made Smarter is a government-backed programme helping manufacturing SMEs in Swindon and Wiltshire adopt digital technologies, develop skills, access expert support and secure funding to improve productivity, competitiveness and future growth.
By Tim Burghes,

If you run a manufacturing business in Swindon or Wiltshire, you'll know that the last few years have demanded resilience, adaptability and a willingness to embrace change. Rising costs, workforce challenges, supply chain pressures and increasing customer expectations have all made growth more complex than it once was.

At the same time, technology is opening new doors for businesses of all sizes. What was once only accessible to large manufacturers is now within reach of smaller firms too. Whether it's automating repetitive tasks, improving production planning, using data more effectively or exploring artificial intelligence, digital technology is becoming an increasingly important part of staying competitive.

The challenge for many business owners is knowing where to start.

That's where Made Smarter comes in.

Made Smarter is a government-backed programme designed specifically to help manufacturing SMEs adopt digital technologies, improve productivity and build confidence in the future. Across the South West, the programme will support dozens of manufacturing businesses through a combination of expert advice, skills development, leadership support, internships and technology grants.

For businesses in Swindon and Wiltshire, this presents a valuable opportunity to access practical support that can help turn ambition into action.

Many business owners assume that digital transformation means expensive machinery, complex systems or major disruption. In reality, the most successful projects often start with a simple question: "What's slowing us down?"

For some businesses, the answer might be time-consuming manual processes. For others it could be difficulties recruiting skilled staff, challenges managing production schedules or a lack of visibility across operations. Made Smarter helps businesses identify those pain points and explore technology solutions that deliver genuine business benefits.

The programme is not about adopting technology for technology's sake. It's about helping manufacturers work smarter, become more productive and create stronger foundations for long-term growth.

A family-run engineering firm might use digital tools to improve production efficiency. A food manufacturer could introduce smarter monitoring systems to reduce waste. A specialist fabrication business may look at automation to increase capacity without increasing overheads. Every business has a different starting point, which is why the support is tailored to individual needs.

One of the most valuable aspects of Made Smarter is the opportunity to access expert guidance. Rather than trying to navigate an increasingly complex technology landscape alone, businesses can work with specialists who understand both manufacturing and digital adoption. This can help leaders make informed decisions, avoid costly mistakes and focus investment where it will make the greatest impact.

The programme also recognises that technology is only part of the story.

Successful digital transformation depends on people just as much as equipment and software. That's why support extends beyond technology itself to include workforce development, leadership and management training, helping business owners and teams build the confidence and skills needed to embrace change. Across the South West, the programme is expected to support organisational workforce development and leadership training for manufacturers looking to strengthen their capabilities for the future.

Another exciting element is the inclusion of digital internships. These placements can help manufacturers bring fresh thinking into the business while giving students and graduates valuable industry experience. It's an opportunity to access new skills, explore digital projects and create stronger connections with future talent.

For some businesses, access to funding may be the catalyst that turns a good idea into reality. The programme includes technology grants, helping eligible businesses invest in projects that can unlock productivity improvements and support growth ambitions. Across the region, a number of grants worth up to £20,000 each are being made available through the programme.

Importantly, Made Smarter is aimed at small and medium-sized manufacturing businesses that are producing physical products. Eligibility includes manufacturers with between 3 and 249 employees that are operating within the programme area and meet the relevant business criteria. This includes a wide range of sectors, from food and drink production to engineering, electronics, furniture making, advanced manufacturing and many more.

For Swindon and Wiltshire, manufacturing has long been a vital part of the local economy. The region is home to an impressive mix of established manufacturers, specialist engineering businesses, innovative start-ups and growing firms serving national and international markets.

What they often have in common is a desire to grow, improve productivity and future-proof their operations.

The pace of technological change is accelerating. Artificial intelligence, automation, data analytics and digital manufacturing tools are rapidly becoming mainstream business technologies. The businesses that explore these opportunities now are likely to be better positioned to compete, attract talent and respond to changing market demands in the years ahead.

That doesn't mean every manufacturer needs to completely transform their business overnight.

In many cases, the most effective improvements come from a series of small, well-planned changes that steadily build momentum. A new planning system. Better use of operational data. Improved connectivity between processes. Smarter maintenance programmes. Enhanced customer insight.

Each step can contribute to a more efficient, productive and resilient business.
