The Food Assembly is a network of online farmers' markets, set up by people in their local communities, directly connecting local food producers to customers. Organisers can be either individuals or organisations and come from all walks of life.
The thriving Food Assembly has over 2,000 members buying directly from 26 local food producers each week. Customers order their food online and then pick it up at a local friendly venue. Online ordering means producers know exactly what to bring so there is no waste. The average distance of food travelled is 28 miles and the producers get over 80% for their work, compared to 20-40% via supermarkets.
Food Assemblies support local farmers and foodmakers, strengthen community networks and offer organisers a supplementary income stream. The model complements traditional farmer's markets where many FoodAssembly producers already sell.
