A plan to transform Swindon's derelict Mechanics' Institute into a multi-purpose venue for the public at a notional cost of £24.5m is to be discussed by Swindon Borough Council.

A masterplan for the historically important but crumbling landmark building in  Swindon’s Railway Village will be discussed by the council's cabinet this week, it is reported.

The change would allow the Grade-II* listed Victorian building to host concerts, proms and theatre as well as weddings and conferences. A specialist consultant has made recommendations to a working group comprising Council members and officers and the Mechanics’ Institution Trust.
